Here’s What to Write in Your Christmas Cards This Year

Sending a Christmas card is as popular as ever, with an estimated eight billion cards being sent annually. Sending good wishes is a great way of spreading seasonal cheer. This may take some time, but it’s time worth spending when a family member, loved one or friend receives your personal message, making it all the more special.

That’s why UK Greetings, a leading supplier of greeting cards, has offered some expert advice on writing the best Christmas card messages for your friends and loved ones this year.

Make it personal

Possibly, the most obvious piece of advice we can offer is to make each card personal to the recipient. This can be a bit time-consuming, especially if you have a lot of cards to send out and you’re handwriting them.

But winter months and Christmas time can be a difficult time for some, which is where receiving a handwritten message could be a huge boost for their spirits. Plus, studies have shown that expressive writing for as little as 10 to 15 minutes a day for a week can significantly improve levels of stress, so writing your cards more expressively and personally can benefit the writer as much as the recipient.

It’s up to you to decide the length of each card, but you can make them unique by adding personal touches. Including anecdotes and stories about your friends and loved ones will make them feel appreciated, as they’ll know it was written just for them.

Include extra bits — pictures, updates, and more

For those loved ones who you don’t often see, it’s a chance to stay connected by sharing family photos and your latest news. Cards in these instances can make cute and welcome keepsakes for the recipients, such as by including photos of your kids in their nativity play or a pet in a festive jumper.

Get silly with it

Sincerity is a great way to connect through your cards, and adding a splash of humour is a great way of lifting spirits and making your loved ones smile. There are few better feelings than making someone laugh, and the Christmas season is rife with opportunities for a joke or two.

This doesn’t have to be cutting-edge standup special material, but a few one-liners or daft call-and-response jokes can be massive spirit-lifters. Here are five of our favourites:

— What do Elves spend their money on? Jingle bills.
— What’s the absolute best Christmas present? A broken drum — you can’t beat it!
— Why are Christmas trees so fond of the past? Because the present is beneath them.

Knock, knock! (Who’s there?) Ho Ho. (Ho Ho who?) Your Santa impression needs a little work!

There’s nothing wrong with the classics

Classics are considered classic for a reason, and around Christmas, there are plenty of inclusions for cards that you just can’t go wrong with. Wishing someone a ‘Merry Little Christmas’ and for their season to be “Merry and Bright” can still be incredibly meaningful.
